The logical solution here seems... to be to allow primary children
to use the Dewey sections. I don't have my statistics at hand as
I write but primary use of the Dewey area is most years higher
than use of the fiction section and other years very, very close.
It would never have occured to me to not let all children use
the Dewey area. No books to take home about dinosaurs? No
books about lions and tigers and bears? Oh my! No books about
trucks or t-ball? No poetry? No arts or crafts? No science
or nature books to explore? No ... folklore?

I do like to place my folklore in the folklore section as
it draws attention to how it is different from "regular"
fiction, and I believe those differences to be of historical
        and cultural significance.

I do entire units on folklore with every grade level, beginning with Ks
(helping to ensure that by the time they have gone from K thru 5,
they have been exposed to ... all those folktales I'd like them to know).

I also do units on non fiction and research with all grade
levels, using books and other information sources to answer
        questions, etc.

So I guess... I really want to know why some choose not to
allow the little ones to use the Dewey section?? What am I
        missing here?

        Thanks!
