Like other librarians, I was getting bent out of shape by the reams of paper flying out of the library printers. My ecological, "waste-not" red flags were up. But when I investigated the actual cost I was surprised. I was informed by our school business office that a sheet of paper costs $.00461, thus a hundred sheets only costs 46 cents. Printer ink for my ink jet printer costs around $25.00 and I replace it about once a month which is only 250.00/year. Costs for the laser printer is 100.00/cartidge and that lasts about four months. Am I correct in my figures? At this price, the library can easily provide paper in the budget for students to print what they need. sarah &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Sarah Peckham, Library Media Specialist Marian High School 7400 Military Ave Omaha, NE 68134 1-402-571-0619 speckham@marian.creighton.edu &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& -----Original Message----- From: Donna Steel Cook [SMTP:donnacook@MAILCITY.COM] Sent: Tuesday, March 30, 1999 6:41 PM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Re: Charge for printing Jane and LM_NET buddies: this year my library instituted a copying and printing policy that has worked just fine. The first page or copy every day for every student is free. Each page or copy after that is 10". If a student needs another copy or page, and a friend or acquaintance will stand beside him to give him or her their free page (pronoun grammar just lost out to brevity), then he can have two free pages or as many free pages as friends he can round up. It is plain to the students that we are not trying to make money, but there is a "governor" on the copy and printing, and the compulsive copiers are certainly restrained. However, when a student needs a copy, she can have her one free copy or printout every day so that books and magazines are not damaged. Students have been just great about paying up. I tried at first to ration paper to the printers, but I've learned that isn't necessary. So, it doesn't have to be "to charge or not to charge." It can be a combination: no charge for one, but two or more costs a dime. --- Donna Cook, Nacogdoches, Texas : Teacher/Librarian Central High; District Coordinator, Central ISD; Library Consultant, Douglass ISD; "Minister of Information" First Baptist Church, Nacogdoches Get your FREE Email at http://mailcity.lycos.com Get your PERSONALIZED START PAGE at http://personal.lycos.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
