Our library (550 students, 9-12) spends considerably more (almost 10
times as much) on ink and toner than the $250 suggested by Sarah. I
don't know how many sheets of paper we use in a given year, but I think
I'm on my fourth or fifth box of paper already (20,000 sheets). I
shutter to think how many of these sheets were wasted/recycled
uselessly--and we charge students for the copies they make--but not for
printed pages.

I think the more important question is not whether or not our libraries
can afford to supply paper and ink, but whether our students use these
resources responsibly. It is our responsibility to encourage responsible
use whether we do this by charging for copies, posting guidelines about
responsible use, encouraging students to save information on floppy
disks whenever possible, or any number of other possibilities. I'm not
so environmentally minded that I refuse to leave my computer on at home
-- it serves as my answering machine, after all -- but it does bother me
when students ask permission to print out a very long and important
document from the Internet but never take the time to retrieve it from
the printer.
