This morning NPR had a commentary by Bebe Campbell stating that conversations about Littleton should include race. The white male entitlement our society endows on our youth allows violence to go unchecked until something like this or Jonesboro, or the Texas murder actually happens. She said that violence happens in all colors, but black violence most often is turned inward; on the few ocasions it sneaks out, it is almost always immediately checked. Her words rang eloquent and true. Hopefully it will be archived and available tomorrow at : http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/ At any rate this is a discussion that teachers and learners need to have, regardless of the catalyst. And discussing race--rather than the internet or parental control or prayer in schools--lends more light to violence in our society today.
