3rd grade literary group

Please help. A group of parents have come to me for suggestions for a
mom/daughter reading group. These are soon to be 3rd graders. My problem is
that they want books that provide a message, interesting, accessible to
both high and low readers and most of all....having a surprise last
chapter...help!!! I had many ideas, but none had a surprise or exciting
ending.
any ideas would be appreciated.
