Today I learned about a first grader who is getting help from one of the Reading Recovery teachers and feels he is going to her because he is stupid. I looked at Patricia Polacco's THANK YOU, MR. FALKER but it is a heavier message than I think this child needs to hear. We have a pretty pervasive message to counteract here. Most school work depends on being able to read and we have few ways for a child to feel competent if they have trouble reading. Nevertheless ... any suggestions for a book to help tell this child that trouble with reading doesn't say anything about how smart you are?? --------------------- Johanna Halbeisen Woodland Elementary School (preK-4) 80 Powder Mill Rd.
