I think notecards are old fashioned.  I always ask myself, is this how I
would do a report?  I think it is also much easier for the teacher to check
if there is copying going on if the students are required to hand-in their
print-outs.  I taught English for two years very recently and by having the
print outs was able to help students really understand about copying versus
putting things in their own words.  Student could either photocopy book
articles or take notes, but they didn't have to be on notecards.
