More observations on the note card issue: As a former English teacher (8 years) and current middle/high school librarian (15 years), I have vacillated on the issue of note cards, but in my newest position, I think I have finally come down on the side of using notecards vs. highlighting xeroxed copies, or putting the notes from one source on a sheet of paper. Teachers require students to actually read and evaluate a source when they assign "50 note cards" by a certain date; students know if they have lightweight resources if they cannot make the 50 card quota, and are not lulled into thinking they have adequate information just because they have sheaves of paper on their topic. It also forces them to pay more attention to the works cited, since they have to do those cards fairly early in the research process. I also find that students 'overhighlight" when they use xerox copies, and cannot relocate information when they actually settle into the writing process. Erin G.
