I found out today that some of you may not have been able to read my = attachment sent yesterday; so here it is again. This is a summary of the responses from my query. 63 of you responded in = less than 24 hours! 38 are in elementary schools; 14 in middle schools; 12 = in high schools. Some are combination elem/middle or middle/high librarians= . 14 didn't say what level they teach. Many do "quilt talks," and make quilts with students. Some of the = products have been donated to local museums, classmates who are moving, = teachers who are moving, classmates who have lost parents (to have = something to hug), or to stay on display in the library. Kay Weisman has been taking the class from the Library of Congress to = develop a unit using the American Memory Collection. Units on: pioneers geometry art story quilts tessellations Underground Railroad U. S. History and American Studies nature biomes other cultures such as Africa and Japan and their quilting traditions mini-unit on quilts with 1st graders Have students make quilt squares illustrating: biographies of famous people their favorite books the millenium Displays: seasonal quilt displays quilts displayed with pertinent books and tools. Manipulatives for=20 students are provided. Autumn leaves quilt as background for Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf. People! A couple of you said you set up a quilt on a frame in the =20 library and invite local quilters to come in, work, and answer =20 questions from students. Also allow students to quilt a few =20 stitches. Helen Bicknell asks this question: "Do you think librarians are quilters = because they like their lives to be organized?" Perhaps so. A pioneer = woman once compared quilting to life in that you have pieces left over or = someone gives you some, and that's like life, your fate. But how you = choose to put the pieces together is your choice. I don't have the article = with me, but the title is "Quilting the Rocky Road" and I think it came = off of Infotrac. Hope this inspires others to use quilts in their schools.
