Kay and Netter's, I have just set up a desktop security program which I believe will solve the problem for Win95/98 machines. It's called WinSelect Policy and Kiosk and apparently has been used by academic and public libraries for a while. It disables many functions and can be customized for your situation. I set it up to allow saving only to the a: (floppy) drive and to the student's home directory on the building server. Saving to the hard drive isn't an option! Students also don't have the ability to change the background, screen saver, or the icons on the desktop. This will be a godsend for me since I spent a lot of time last year changing icon names back from obscenities and removing nearly-naked lady wallpaper. You can download a 60 day trial of WinSelect at www.hypertec.com. The program is a bit pricey ($34 per station), but if it performs as promised (as it's DOS predecessor did for me), I think it'll be worth it. I'd be glad to answer any questions that I can about the program. So far, it's been easy to set up and use. Dear LM_Netter's: We have had some major trouble with downloads from the Internet--games and even viruses. We have IBM machines with Win 95 running on a Win NT network with a T1 line. Is there a way to keep students from downloading from the internet on certain workstations? TIA Kay Goss Director, Library Media Services Mansfied R-IV Schools 315 W.
