Rather than put the numbers after the decimal on the second line, we place
our labels vertically instead of horizontally for thin books. Previous
librarians and/or vendors have done as you suggested and I find it to be
confusing for students and adults alike. Give it a try! I thought I'd hate
it at first, but it really works well.

If you are having to re-label, then this is a great idea. I wish we could
lobby the vendors to do this:

Have the label be 3 lines long with the main number on top, the decimal in
the middle, and the cutter on the bottom. While numbers with longer decimal
places than 3 digits are still a problem, they are still easier to get in
order by the first three places of the decimal.....

    598 629 398 599
    .2 .123 .2 .79
    Wex Bar Gri Lam

It is great for those thinner books! If I had enough time (ha, ha) I would
re-label whole sections of those problem numbers this way. The ones I have
done "on the fly" are the easiest books in the nonfiction section to locate
and shelve correctly!

This idea belongs to Janet McElroy, newly retired from the Tuscaloosa City
School System, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She also started placing the author's
whole last name on the Fiction call numbers and liked that a lot, too. (She
was in a secondary school where the fiction books are thicker than mine!)
