As an Australian school librarian (Teacher Librarian is the term we
use here) I am often amazed at how universal some problems are. We have
just had an alomost identical problem. Our security system was
installed in 1994. It was out of use for a couple of weeks in 1995, 3
months in 1996, 4 months in 1997 and not at all in 1998. The company
that installed it went bankrupt in 1998, whith part of our system taken
away for repair at the time. The manufacturer of the original equipment
was able to repair it if we wished, but the cost would be considerable
as the control box which had been removed for repair would have to be
replaced. They also told us that they would only support that system
for another 6 months. We have replaced it with a 3M system which is
compatible with the tags and the sensitiser/desensitiser for the
original system. I do know of schools that have had 3M systems for 20
years with no repairs ever needed, but others have needed service at
least once a year. There was a post here earlier today rergarding the
cost of a 3M service contract - which seems horrendous.
The price of books not stolen over the 4 years that we had ur previous
system would aproximately have covered its original cost. I would guess
that we had 500 books not stolen, at $25 per book average that covers
the $12,000 the system cost us. Service contracts were $360 a year. All
figures in $Australian, deduct a third for US equivilants.
