I've been surprised that there hasn't been much or any talk about
Banned Books Week, at least among us high school librarians. I'd like
to say what I've done and ask if anyone else has good ideas for next
year.
We are a small school of about 170 boys, and by and large they're not
great readers, at least of books (they love magazines and newspapers).
So I try to do things to capture their interest. The topic of banned
books fascinates them. Last year I displayed several books from our
collection and put a slip in each one saying why it had been challenged
and where. ("You mean the BIBLE has been banned??!!!") I put a strip
of yellow Do Not Cross This Line tape across the display, and it got a
lot of attention.
This year my display was similar, but to attract attention I made red
and white simple banned stickers (like the no smoking signals) and put
them on the books and on a poster I made. Plus I hung up the three
"Classic Reading" posters from Highsmith, and slapped a banned sticker
on the picture of each title that had been challenged. (As a reference
I use the handbook from ALA.)
Whether or not it really increases reading, I don't know, but the boys
love it.
What have other people done? I would expect that high schools, anyway,
would "celebrate" this week.
