Hi, and thank's for all the responses to the question about when is it best
to begin keyboarding with students, and what software to use.

I had 14 replies to the question and the results are a follows:
Half begin OR place a major emphasis on keyboarding in the 3rd
grade. It was felt that hand-eye coordination before the 3rd grade was
more limited in younger children. Five said that their district/school
began in the lower(K-2) grades and felt that their students could handle
it, and that it helped prevent bad habits from going on too long. The
remaining responses said that keyborading began in 4th or 5th grades,
citing that students see a more practical need for it as papers are
assigned to them.

There was a wide range of software suggested, but Type to Learn JR (by
Sunburst) seemed to be the most widely used...especially
with 3rd grade and lower. Several mentioned Mavis B. as being used at all
levels in the elementary. Other programs mentioned were...All Right Type,
Typin's Cool, Touchtype, Ultrakey, Typing
Tutor, Appleworks, Read-Write & Type, Paws, and Disney's Adventures in Typing.

Again, thank-you for the information and I hope that this helps others
looking for similar information. Have a GREAT day...and
better weekend!!
