BOOK: Water Rat by Laird

After the death of his father, 14 year old Matt is being raised by his
cruel uncle in pre-revolutionary PA.  After being beaten too many
times he runs away to a rich family who said they would help.  He
lives with them and while the adults are away, the house is
attacked by Pirates but Matt saves the children even though the
house is trashed.  Matt figures out where the pirates have been
hiding and the British soldiers come and capture them.  This 186
page book is an exciting read (although a little intimidating
because of the lack of white space on the pages.)  The chapters
are short and instead of a title have a few sentences from the
coming chapter -- it gives the feel of the old movie serials, "Tune
next week when you will hear..."  This would make a great read
aloud book because of these features.
