The following memo was in my mailbox this afternoon: In response to an inquiry regarding copying of materials for students with special needs, I have received the following information from ****** attorney for the district. Tape recordings may be made of books owned by the library. When the audio copy of the book is being circulated, the print copy of the book must remain in the library. If an audiotape of a book is purchased, a back-up copy may be made. The back up may be circulated with the original remaining in the library. Copies may be made of workbooks/texts if they are only being made occasionally and they are not being made to avoid purchasing the text or workbook This is contrary to every copyright workshop I've attended. Advice is needed. Since the district attorney has written this opinion, does this give the district librarians any protection? Thanks for any suggestions.
