GEN: Harry Potter Merchandising

Harry Potter is moving into the house of Barbie. Warner Bros. Consumer=20
Products, which owns worldwide licensing and merchandising rights for the=20
Harry Potter books (three are out; four more are planned) has selected=20
Mattel as its official worldwide Harry Potter toy licensee.
Not only that, but toys based on the Harry Potter books will be sold=20
exclusively in Warner Bros. Studio Stores beginning this fall. A line of=20
movie tie-in toys will follow in 2001, to coincide with the film's=20
scheduled release date. (Warner Bros. owns the rights to the first two=20
Potter books; Steven Spielberg will direct the first.) Plans are to release=
=20
the toys simultaneously in the U.K. and U.S., Harry's two most loyal=20
markets.

This is the first good new for Mattel in a while. It's bled red ink since=20
last year's purchase of the Learning Company. Chairwoman and CEO Jill Barad=
=20
was forced out on February 3.--Shannon Maughan
