Right you are Gabe and if you want to just do a screen capture of part of
the screen, Press Apple + Shift + 4
Your cursor will become a cross and you can use it to make a box around the
portion of the screen you want to capture and it will just save that
portion.

This is especially great if you want to show a dialog box or text block.
