I totally agree with Sharon. I just returned from the ALA Spectrum Scholarship Institute where a buzz was started at the educaction concept of Service-based Learning for graduate MLIS students. Another educational concept put fort was "effective teaching". A lot of conversation flowed between scholars towards the lack of "practical" or "applicable" coursework that consumed many ALA-accredited MLIS programs. Although nothing beats practical on the job experience, there was a great consensus that too much hard work was spent on assignments that would never serve us or the public we serve after our graduation. Justification ran from, "It's a neccasary evil, it's just a process, it's just your passport, to all learners are different-some do need theoratical application" among others. Bottom-line a lot of "new librarian" questions during and right after graduation mirror our "training" and preparation. A new mission for me and possibly for others is work towards MLIS teaching that is grounded in effectiveness and service for the population(s) we serve. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharon McLarney" <Luv2Read74@AOL.COM> To: <LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU> Sent: Monday, July 10, 2000 5:59 PM Subject: Re: GEN: attention: new librarians > I understand what Alice was trying to say.
