I think the place to learn about how to get books back and run a freshman
orientation are best learned during student teaching placement under the
direction of the librarian.  Their guidance is valuable.  Also, don't
overlook the library staff if you really want to know the nuts and bolts of
circulation and procedures.  In a large library with staff the librarian is
the teacher but the staff, especially the paralibrarians, are also qualified
to answer questions about day to day things.  It's really up to the library
student to take advantage of being in a working school library and make the
most of it.
