You're absolutely right. But I wish I had known then what I
know now. The policies and procedures used by the media specialist
in the school where I did my student teaching worked very well for
her at the time. But they didn't work well at the high school I
eventually transferred to or the elementary school I'm working in
now. Different situations altogether. There's no way to magically
anticipate all future needs while an inexperienced student teacher
or even as an old timer. I didn't learn a thing about working with
mostly Hispanic ESL students in college or during my student
teaching experience and it never occured to me to ask
anyone. Yet here I am today with 85% of my students falling into
that category. I'm scrambling and it's not because I didn't
pay attention in class and didn't ask lots of questions during
student teaching!
