Hi all, I hope you don't mind a few questions from a school librarian wannabe. I earned an MLS from Rutgers back in 1986, but at the time I was sure that I would never want to work in a school setting, so I did not bother to take the courses necessary to obtain educational media certification. (Big mistake) After working in a corporate library for 10 years, and doing abstracting/indexing work for an online database from home for the past four, I've decided I really need a career change, and am very interested in working in a school library/media center. What I'm looking for is some advice/encouragement from others that have started with the MLS, and then at some point later decided to pursue certification, rather than starting with a teaching background. I have checked the archives and know that there are at least a few of you out there. I live in southwestern Virginia, so anything specific to this state would be especially appreciated. Also, I'm wondering if any school districts are willing to hire someone with an MLS, but no certification, if the candidate agrees to pursue the appropriate certification? Any suggestions about how to find out about jobs in my area?
