A number of posters on this topic seem to be drawing the conclusion that nicer/more professional dress equals more respect for our profession, both from students and adults. I haven't seen this to be true, at least in the Pacific Northwest. The most respected teachers in my current school dress casually. One, a man, wears jeans and hiking boots every day, sometimes with a sport jacket. The second, a woman, wears khaki pants most of the time. They are also the toughest teachers we've got and provide a lot of the leadership in our school. They dress this way regardless of the group they're with. My perception is that where you are matters. I know that Seattle is one of the most laid back places around, in terms of acceptable dress. I've seen everything from evening attire to demin at the opera and symphony concerts. I know this isn't true everywhere. So when we make the big move half way across the country in a few years, I'll need to figure out what's acceptable dress where I'm going and shop accordingly. So, my two bits, this time. :) Julie Julie Anderson, Librarian Liberty High School, a National Blue Ribbon School Renton, WA (425) 837-4901 andersonj@issaquah.wednet.edu =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
