Thanks to all that responded. According to a number of sources, it comes from the "baby" division of the Girl Scouts (the Brownies). Like the GS, they have rewards for learning/accomplishing things. Of course, the word has taken on other meanings (e.g. "brown nosing"). You guys are great! Laura R.
