Here is a great hit for the stealing of mouseball problems.

I used to be a shop teacher along with being a computer teacher. Here is
how to prevent your mouse balls from ever being stolen:

Buy the smallest set-screws you can find, no longer than 1/8" long. You
will have to go to a good hardware store to get them. Buy a numbered drill
size that is just the right size for the screw, just a bit smaller than the
outside diameter. Drill CAREFULLY into the keeper ring that holds the ball
in the mouse, then insert the screw (you will need a matching Allen wrench)
until it is flush. Once this is done you will never loose another mouse
ball. The ring can only be removed with an Allen wrench of just the right
size and it would be way too much trouble for a student to ever find one.
Keep the wrench put away, and when you need to clean the mouse, just take
out the set screw, clean the mouse, and reinsert the set screw. It works
like a charm. Easy, secure, cheap, removable.

I have installed these screws in over a hundred mouses in one of the worst
schools, and we never lost a mouse ball afterward. I used to sell kits
with all the parts and instructions for $7 to schools. I did that for a
while, then went on to other thnigs. I might have a kit still around if you
want to buy one. Otherwise, I have told you how to do it, and you can take
it from there. This is the best solution that has been found. I have
testimonials from many computer lab teachers who have used my technique and
bought my kits. You are welcome to email me if you are interested.
