I was very concerned about the message concerning water pistols in the library and the administration doing nothing about it. In our system, this would be a deliberate destruction of school property and would be dealt with according to our code of conduct. In another system in the Birmingham area, graduating seniors vandalized their school because they didn't agree with proper graduation conduct and therefore were not allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony. In all of the years that I have been working in education, I have been appalled at the behavior of students who are getting ready to leave one level to go to the next step. In our middle school division where the conduct grade plays a major part in determining if students would be able to return the next school year, the eighth graders decided a month or two ago that nothing could be done to them since they would not be back next year. Because of their attitude (and that of their parents) they were not able to have a banquet and dance, as all of the other eighth grade classes had up until this year. It seems to me that when students reach such an important part of their lives as graduating from high school, they should be on their best behavior rather than their worst. When my son graduated from high school 10 years ago, I was really embarrassed by both the behavior of the graduating students (who were seated behind the podium and even threw beach balls while the diplomas were given out) and their parents seated in the stadium stands. It seems that times have really changed since I graduated X number of years ago. Just my 2 cents worth. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Madeline L.
