GEN: List of characters

HI,
    I have decided that for my summer/fall  project I want to create a
mural of storybook characters in my library.  I am in a K-8 building and
would like to use the mural to introduce the students to memorable
characters from books.  I have challenged my students to come up with a
character for each letter of the alphabet (The ABC's of Literature).
Does anyone know where I can find a list of characters or send me your
favorites from A to Z.
