I wanted to respond to the following message. I have taken excerpts from both the beginning and the end of her message. Marianne Haggerty wrote: "Dear Colleagues, I recently requested your recommendations for online literary criticism. We currently subscribe to Gale Online and have Twayne and Scribners Authors available. Poor user interface and slowness of their server make this a less than satisfactory product. It is also quite expensive. Many of you wrote expressing those sentiments... ...I wish I could offer more options, but I fear there isn't much out there and that's why Gale is in no hurry to improve their product." I just wanted to comment that, as far as I have seen, there is absolutely no substitute for the Gale on-line product. We use DISCovering authors and have found it to be easy for our students to use, offering a wealth of literary criticisms from quality sources unavailable anywhere else. I haven't seen the problems regarding speed that are mentioned. In the past we relied on Gale's print products (CLC, TCLC, CA, etc.). They were always of high quality and always expensive. We had to pick and choose volumes, and certainly couldn't afford everything. There wasn't any other product in print that could match their content, however. I guess my point is "You get what you pay for." It holds true with print resources as well as Internet-based products. If you want to guide students to quality resources available through the Internet you are going to have to pay for them.
