The book "Tomie dePaola: His art & stories" by Elleman was the source for much of the following information, and was highly recommended. "The Art Lesson", "Tom", "Nana Upstairs Nana Downstairs", and "The Baby Sister" are based on events in his life. dePaola portrayed himself as certain characters in the following stories: Joey in "Watch out...soup", Andy in "Andy, that's my name", Oliver in "Oliver Button...sissy", and Bobby in "Now one foot..." Also, his new series of beginning chapter books is autobiographical ("26 Fairmount Avenue" (Newbery Honor), and "Here we all are". Look for another title this spring. Thanks to Kim, Lynn, and Ginny, as well as everyone else who responded.
