Thank you to everyone who contributed titles that lend themselves well to
comparing and contrasting! Here's a nice list to work with.
*****************************
The Three Little Pigs an the Big Bad Wolf and The Three Little Wolves and
the Big Bad Pig.

The Library Dragon by Deedy and Check It Out by Gibbons.

Chicken Little and The Foolish Rabbit

Red-eyed Tree Frog by Cowley and Green Wilma by Tedd Arnold.

The Tailypo and the Teeny Tiny Woman both by Paul Galdone.

Both versions of Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Sims Tabak.

Compare fiction and nonfiction treatment of animals such as foxes,
bears, owls, etc. but would think you could use any animals or people.

A biography of Emily Dickinson with the picture book Emily.

Three Little Pigs with and The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by A. Wolf,
as told to Jon Scieszka

 Stone Soup/Button Soup/Nail Soup/Bone Button Borscht etc.

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback/Bit by Bit by Steve
Sanfield/Something from Nothing-by Phoebe Gilman

(Mem Fox) Hattie and the Fox and (Hutchins)Rosie's Walk - 2 stories about a
chicken and a fox

Variations on a folktale such as Mushroom in the Rain (Ginsburg), The Mitten
(by Tresselt or by Brett) or Knock Knock Teremok (Arnold) or The Elf's Hat
(Weninger). A child once pointed out the the mitten story could only
happen once (because the mitten is destroyed) but the mushroom story could
happen over and over as the mushroom would expand every time it rains.

Folktale variations I've used include Rumpelstitlskin (Galdone and
Zelinsky), Whuppity Stoorie, and Stanley's Rumplestiltskin's Daughter.

Miss Rumphius (Cooney) compared with My Great Aunt Arizona (Houston); one is
a fictional character (Miss Rumphius) and the other was a real person

I am comparing Bonylegs by Joanna Cole with Babuska Baba Yahga by Pollacco.
We are discussing character.

"Jim and the Beanstalk" by Briggs and "jack and the Beanstalk". There is a
new book out called "Kate and the Beanstalk".

There are many variants of Cinderella(over 500 I think) that originate from
all over the world. These are great for comparing and looking at different
cultures. "The Korean Cinderella", "The Egyptian Cinderella" and others.

Different versions of fairy tales -- one first grade class found 7
different versions of Little Red Riding Hood and participated in a great
discussion on similarities and differences. You can find at least a dozen
different versions of Cinderella -- including videos.

With younger students, I do author studies in which we compare and contrast
different works by the same author. For example, Kevin Henkes
(Chrysanthemum, Chester's Way, Lily and the Purple Plastic Purse) or Beatrix
Potter (Peter Rabbit, Jeremy Fisher, Mrs. Tiggle-Winkle) etc..
You can also use picture books by different authors that fall into the same
theme (ex. friendship, moving away, family, etc.).

Fortunately by Remi Charlip. On one page something fortunate happens and on
the next..something unfortunate.

I've used The Mitten by Jan Brett and Alvin Tresselt. Both are beautiful
books and have likenesses and differences. You could also use
several of the fairytales/folktales.

Paul Zelinsky has rewritten many old favorites.

The Country Mouse and the Town Mouse have also been rewritten by Jan Brett,
B. Watts, and N. Brooks.
