Thanks to all who contributed to this Hit. I really appreciate your taking
the time to assist.

FUTURE

· They will be using an automated catalog as they go on in school--Jr. High,
HS, college....
· to train students how to work in libraries as they go on in school and
become life long learners.
· Teach students skills they will need in most public libraries, high
schools and colleges.
· How about the fact that over 60% of all jobs demand computer literacy
skills
and the number one skill employers are looking for are people who can find,
select, use and communicate information (e.g., information literacy skills
taught by the librarian).
· Today's information literacy skills demand students know how to use
technology.
· The next generation of reference tools that students use are online.
· The teaching of electronic information literacy starts in K-1 and students
need to be comfortable using technology before they get to middle school.
· it will prepare students for the future and how technology can
significantly improve student test scores (Colorado Study 1999; Pennsylvania
Study 1999 and; Alaska Study 1999)

EXPANDING LITERACY OPPORTUNITIES

· While searching online, one encounters far more titles, far more key
words,
far more subjects than found manually.
· Children learn related terms and can access them simply by pressing
"enter"
on the word or phrase that is highlighted.
· "Teachable moment" They learn synonyms and antonyms for words and learn
that certain concepts are related.

MORE EFFICIENT USE OF MATERIALS

· more subjects can be listed than on printed cards, enabling the
books to be used more often and wisely-
· Access by parents, teachers, students, community from home to make
selections of materials by hold or interlibrary loan in multiple school
districts
· Teachers in one building can check another
buildings collection without leaving their room. The same for checking
their school library collection.
· Ease of accessing materials and cross references on online catalog.

MORE EFFICIENT USE OF MATERIALS

· circulation increases by leaps and bounds! Partly due to the
intensive weeding done before automating, so things were easier to find, but
also do to the ease in finding materials.
· Increased student use - honest, your circulation will pick up because the
students love to use the equipment and end up finding books that they
ordinarily would not have looked for.
· when I automated 8 or 9 years ago, my circulation soared because they all
wanted to use the computer to check out their books.
· Also with a union catalog you may more easily provide multiple copies of
one title for a reading project.

ACCESS (AND ABILITY TO HAVE ENOUGH) CURRICULUM RELATED MATERIALS

· Access by teachers & students in their classrooms to select curriculum
appropriate materials and to make holds as necessary. The teaching of
electronic information literacy starts in K-1 and students need to be
comfortable using technology before they get to middle school.
· Ability to provide statistics needed for collection development.
· Can generate statistics to show the strengths and weaknesses of your
collection. ie 5% of your collection is in the 590'sand it generates 50% of
your checkouts so there is a real need for morematerials here.
· Statistics to show age of collection to show needs in an area--if your
space and science books show an average copyright date of 1972 you have a
problem.
· Creation of bibliographies to match staff and student needs.
· Library automation programs can be crossed referenced with school
appropriate web sites.

MISCELLANEOUS

· Visual appeal of resources on online catalog.
· Students will observe through use of this system a "real world"
application of technology.
· Students vocabulary will increase. Check in & out, renew, hold, fine,
bibliography, call number, Boolean, subject, title, author, series, etc.
will have real meaning because of students greater interest in using an
automated system.
· Students can use the automated catalog at an earlier age because it is so
much easier than looking through all those cards.
· The older students are much more willing to look up books in the catalog
when they get to use a computer to do it.
· How about that the card catalog is obsolete - no longer used in public
libraries or high ed.
· More time to work with students - When we were studying automation
systems, Winnebago put out a list of more librarian "chores" such as carding
books, signing out books, and writing out overdues. The list included time
spent per week doing these chores manually, and when automated. The time
differences were impressive - from hours to minutes. Perhaps you could
contact Winnebago and ask.....their 800 number is 1-800-654-3002
· Free up space now occupied by the old card catalog.
· The Follett 4.1version allows for a visual as well as a text OPAC which is
great for my little guys as half of the school is ESL and we have two
classes of LD
· elementary students do not have the alphabetical searching skills required
to use the old card catalog.
· Students see the value of correct spelling as they use the online catalog.
· Students learn higher level searching skills. They are more willing to
search the online catalog than the card catalog.
· With multiple search stations more students and staff may access the
catalog of materials at the same time than the card catalog.
· PLEASE is there anything else. The old card catalog is ancient.

MONEY MATTERS - SAVING

· better inventory and keep better control over the huge asset that a
library collection is to the district. You must have thousands and
thousands of dollars invested in that collection and having it automated
provides much better, faster data on what's there and what's missing.
· Greater accuracy in inventory control and reporting.
· Ability to determine worth of collection easily.
· HOURS and money saved by not having to produce cards, file and maintain in
catalog...more time with students!
· Compile overdue lists, print in minutes rather than hours - more time with
students.
· System lets you know how many books student has overdue. Also easy to
generate over due lists and bills. This decreases lost and unpaid for
books.
· Better management of the collection - can track which books are used,
which
are not, which are heavily used and therefore might need additional copies,
...
· Accountability for ordering. (see above)
· If you automate the entire district, you can have a union catalog
indinterlibrary loan in your district. Saves money on multiple copies of
seldom used items - like videos used once a year for one unit only.
· inventory, accountablility of how funds are spent, and statistics for
state or district reports.
