The story goes under lots of different titles but the king wants to have a
new bed made which has to be 8 feet by 6 feet and the Royal Carpenter's
apprentice uses his own small foot as the measure. It's too small and the
king is cranky so the bed is made again using the Royal Carpenter's foot
this time. Same result, so they use the queen's foot and so on until they
eventually use the king's foot and it fits. You can play around with it as
much as you like using various characters and the feet of the kids in your
class - the purpose is to show the need for an agreed unit of measurement
and is a great way to introduce standard units. You could also adapt it
to making a cake and using handfuls instead of pounds and ounces (for those
non-metric countries)

Have fun,

Cheers
