The best way to fight a challenge to any instructional material used in =
the school is to have a selection policy with a plan for handling =
reconsideration of materials. Schools that have Selection Policies and =
Reconsideration Policies have a much better chance of retaining materials =
than schools that don't. Another key element can be the support of the =
principal for intellectual freedom. The scenario posed in the LM_NET =
message isn't too far afield because the Harry Potter books have been the =
most challenged books in the United States two years running. Other items =
to use when dealing with challenges might include The Freedom to Read =
Statement, reviews of Harry Potter books, articles about Harry Potter =
books and their popularity, and defenses used by other schools who have =
faced challenges to Harry Potter books.
