Dear all: Our 10th grade English teacher asked for my help today and, of course, I'm turning to the people that know best. A previous teacher had used "The Women of Brewster Place" in the curriculum. The new teacher doesn't like it (too much going on, the protrayal of women as victims/survivors rather than heroines, and the way black men are treated are among her criticisms) and would like to change for next year. Can you recommend other novels featuring black women that she could use? We've discussed "The Color Purple" but she'd like some other options as well. I will post a HIT if there is sufficient response. Thanks! Laura R.
