As mentioned before, 917's are for travel, etc and the 970's are for history.
 But don't forget to check in your 300's for materials on the culture of the
place in question.  In discussion with the head reference librarian here, she
stated that it was generally left to the cataloger to determine the most
appropriate place - despite Dewey.
