I taught elementary for 11 years (hadn't even planned to be a teacher when I went to college - got my degree in anthropology!) I was the computer "expert" in the building at that time. I went into library science because I thought I would have more time to handle teachers' computer problems and because I was tired of critical parents. This will be my 15th year as a Media Specialist and I love the job. But - I don't have any extra time to solve computer problems...and there are a lot more computers to deal with! Unfortunately, the trend in our district is to hire classroom teachers without MLS degrees to work in the Media Centers. Some have technology backgrounds, some are working towards a MLS. The University of Michigan has pretty well forgotten school library media specialists. In fact, the word library was dropped from the title of the program. Wayne State is the only other university that I know of that has an MLS program in the state. We're finding that it's hard to find qualified people with the degree.
