One of the best books I have found to use with 5th grade is SMALL STEPS THE YEAR I HAD POLIO by Peg Kehret. This is the true story of Peg overcoming the obstacle of Polio (and being completely paralyzed) You cannot get through this book without a tear and it leads to wonderful discussions about current illnesses that people are fighting. It also leads to a study of vaccines and why students need their immunizations. (Cross curriculum) I highly recommend this book. I use it every year and the discussions it provokes are fascinating.
