A hit has been requested by several, so
here it is:

I would base it on two things - first,
technology. Most teachers, for
instance, do NOT use filmstrips anymore.
If you have one teacher who still does,
offer him/her the filmstriop to keep in
the room.
Secondly, use the criteria you would use
for books - out of date, bad shape, not
checked out for x number of years,
incorrect info, etc.

Many book weeding guidelines would
apply--stereotypical (women and girls
as nurse and teacher, etc. not doctors
and superintendents), an OK message
but with funny looking clothes, etc, and
of course out-of-date/incorrect
information.

My first step is to check circulation.
I have been at this school 5
years. I deleted all things which have
not circulated in the past 5
years. Since my teachers often take
things without checking in/out I
put the deleted items on a table in
the lounge with a note
encouraging teachers to take what would
really be used and then threw
away what was left.
Otherwise, use the same criteria as
you do for books.

In Texas:
The Texas State Library has a guide
called The CREW Method: Expanded
Guidelines for Collection Evaluation and
Weeding for Small and Medium-Sized
Public Libraries. It's great and it's
FREE from the Texas State Library.
