At last, a controversy over Artemis! I had the pleasure of meeting Eoin Colfer about two weeks ago in New York when my sixth-graders took me along to meet him at our local public library. The only comment I had for him was met with a grin: I remarked that my principal didn't like the protagonist because he was unlikeable while I found Artemis true to form as a twelve-year-old boy, many of whom are not likeable people and many of whom should be colored in shades of gray. And who could not feel for feisty little Holly? Many of my kids surely did. While we are all not only entitled to but also duty-bound to have our opinions about reading material, I am puzzled by the obligatory comparison with *Harry Potter*. Some of my student liked the books and some didn't. That's the way I like it. These two books are very different - and vive la difference! Wishing one and all a diverse and enjoyable summer reading schedule- Anne Dykstra Lbirarian Professional Performing Arts School New York, NY tzolelet@aol.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
