I agree...we should show students the value of a good collection.

I've talked it over with a few librarians in my system.  They both tear out
the cards as soon as they arrive.  The previous librarian did not do this
and since our periodicals go directly to the shelves for student use once
the next months arrives, many of our SI-K magazines have been mutilated by
kids trying to tear out the cards.  I think I am going to start tearing them
out as soon as they arrive in order to preserve the appearance of our
periodicals.

I went to those issues of SI-K with the Tiger Woods cards only to find they
had been ripped out already.  Unfortunately they usually take the bindings
of the magazines with them...
