I laughed when I read about the faculty room next door being so noisy - = not that it's funny, but we do all have the same problem! Teachers are = notorious for talking during meetings, when they wouldn't tolerate it in = their own classes. I have a rule of "No eating or drinking" in the = library, but when faculty come in to do quiet work, they often bring in = coffee and a snack. I don't say anything, but don't like it either. As for noise, I ask them to keep it so that only the people at their table = can hear them. I ssshhh a couple of times a day (I tell them that = Shushing 101 was a mandatory course in Library school, and that we had our = hearing tested to see if we could detect a candy wrapper at 100 yards). I = try to keep a sense of humor about the whole thing, and only rarely ask = someone to leave (after several admonitions). Friday is "classical music" = day in here and we will usually tolerate more student noise then, too. = Our new renovations will give us 4 small "study/group" rooms. I'm trying = to decide - should they be the noisy or the quiet area? My thinking now = is they'll be quiet, the rest can be working noise. J'aime L.
