Laura,
         Cheer-up it could be worse.  In the city where I used to work, a
K-8 school of the kind and era you describe was built in what was a high
crime district.  The library was indeed the "hub of the school."  The
library is without walls in the middle of the great hall.  Every time there
is a class change or a kid goes to the bathroom there is traffic through
the library.  Kids not only steal, destroy or "re-arrange" books, they
crawl into empty cupboard and shelves to hide.  The LMS, with no aide, has
a fixed schedule of SFA Reading and K-3 library classes that leave him four
"prep" periods a week to be a librarian for the rest of the school.  And
the system wonders why they can't keep a LMS there.
