Thank you to all who responded... The Cultures of the World Series by
Marshall Cavendish got the most recommendations. I'll also look into the
Enchantment of the World series and what the World Almanac set. Thanks Again.

We have the Cultures of the World and the Enchantment of the World series.
We are a secondary school but I think the reading level would be okay for
intermediate students that are fairly strong reader.

We have had good results with the Enchantment of the World series. The
graphics are also of high quality. the newest ones are the best. They are
redoing the older texts.

 I just today received a preview box of books which included a
nice intermediate set published by Gareth Stevens.  You might want to
check it out.

I'd suggest - Major World Nations (published by Marshall Cavendish?), or
Enchantment of the World - Second Series.
