This past summer, my old Windows 95 PC finally gave up the ghost. So, I
bought a new Compaq Presario (pentium 4) running windows XP.

Now to my question. My old computer came with that nasty little "Works"
application suite. Being in grad school then, and needing a word processor
that could communicate with the ones at college, I went out and bought Office
97 and loaded it on the old computer back in--well--1997.

So now, my new computer has the new version of Works. Every time I try to do
something, Works doesn't (work, that is). It lets me get so far and then
goes into this "not responding" mode (stubborn @#$%^&* mule).

Now, I really don't want to have to purchase Microsoft Office again. I mean,
all I want to do is write my cranky letters to the Cleveland Plain Dealer
(that they don't print anyway) and keep my resume updated. I do not NEED
Office 2000 to do that. The license says that I can have it on ONE computer.
My old one passed away, so I only HAVE one computer.

Can I take my old Office 97 disk and load it on my new computer?

Can a Windows XP machine use a Office 97 disk, or will it cause my new
computer to get hemorrhoids? And if it did, where would I apply the
Preparation H?

Is it legal to load it on my new computer? If one's computer dies, does that
mean that you also lose everything you bought and loaded on that computer?
And for that matter, what about my Pictionary and Monopoly games? I'd really
like to load them too, but have not done it.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer my questions.
