Subject: Science books

Hi,
     I think I've got a doozy.
I had been asked by a science teacher here for any reccommendations
for science books for reading classes next year. They are thinking of
buying class sets for a "literature link." We are a middle school math
and
science academy. Here are the specifics as best as I could get:

nonfiction
short (don't want the students to lose interest before they start - but
remember this is M.S. academy, Oh and we are a school within a school so
we have non-academy students as well)
6th grade wants life, cells, and animals and asked about Jane Goodall &
Koko
7th grade wants earth science and asked about John Westley Powel books
(by
or about)
8th grade wants physics

I am hoping someone can give me ideas for them.

Thanks,
