Back when I first started teaching, it was said that the optimal learning time for students is in the morning hours. Has this changed? Our staff is wanting to move ALL reading instruction time to first thing in the morning. The instruction time would be 90 minutes in length. During that time, there will be no other classes held. No Physical Education, Library, Music, etc. When asked what these teachers would do during that 90 minutes, it was suggested that we go into the classroom and help teach reading. And as our P.E. teacher pointed out, some of us aren't reading teachers. Then it was suggested that they wouldn't necessarily be teaching reading, we would be operating more in the capacity of a para!! Sorry, folks, I was once a certified reading teacher, but I'm not much interested in returning to that capacity, and I'm certainly not interested in being a para. I didn't have a suggestion to help the other "specials" teachers, but I suggested we go to a totally flexible library schedule, and they could bring their students to the library as needed for a skills lessons that we develop together and incorporate in with their reading instruction. They didn't like that idea at all. Can you believe it? I think they are reluctant to lose the planning time they get during their classes' library instruction time. Has anyone had this experience? Is there research out there that questions this morning optimal learning time theory? Do any other schools have ALL reading instruction first thing every morning. If you do, what DO the "other" teachers do? Thanks for any and all support.
