I am looking for a book. It was written in the early 80's I think, by a librarian from Somerville, MA. It is a coming of age story featuring a working class girl who, unlike most of those around her, is a dedicated student but struggling with the choice of staying put or moving beyond her roots by going to college. She is mentored by a teacher whom she likes/dislikes. A central metaphor in the book is the construction of a superhighway that is dividing the community in half, cutting her off from parts of her childhood. At least this is what I remember it being about. I thought it was called "Making Connections" but I can't find it anywhere.
