Sheila,

There is one aspect to ALA accrediation of the MLS degree that for the
most part has not been addressed on LM_NET lately. While many
(most?) school systems do not require the ALA accrediation there is
another factor to consider. Might you EVER want (or NEED) to work (full
time, part time) at a college or public library? For the past 2 1/2 years
I've been working part time, weekends, at our local university (Salisbury
University) as a faculty adjunct. I would NOT have been even considered if
my degree was not ALA accredited. Since I have the number of years I
need to take retirement from Maryland, the ALA accrediation now affords me
the possiblity of employment in the academic and public library
sectors! That could be a major consideration, when you think about
it! For those of you not near retirement...think about it...you NEVER can
predict what the future will hold... having these possiblities as back up
is a very nice thing indeed. I am so very glad that my degree is ALA
accreditiated for this reason. You just never know.

Ann
