The ALA accredited program is one that most universities and public libraries want when they hire their MLS librarians. If you aren't planning to work in a library that requires this accreditation, it won't be important. However, if you ever plan to work at a university or public library that requires this type of degree, you may find the doors closed to you. The ALA accredited program is basically one that supports the American Library Association's guidelines, theories, and principals. That doesn't mean that other programs aren't teaching them, it just means that the American Library Association oversees the program to make certain that the university's program adheres to the guidelines set by the ALA which may involve faculty status, student enrollment, etc. Check with your program to see why it doesn't offer the ALA accreditation. If you want that specific degree, you may be able to transfer to another university that will accept your hours. Others may want to elaborate on the topic. These are just my two cents. ~Shonda Brisco Trinity Valley Upper School Librarian Ft.
