This is "The year of the Perfect Christmas Tree"
illustrated by Barbara Cooney and I believe written by
her as well. Father is off at World War I, and its
their family's turn to supply the Christmas Tree for
the church. Everyone thinks they can't do it, but the
little girl and her mother go off in the night and
find the one the father had marked with a ribbon back
in the spring. The Tweetsie Railroad brings the
father home just in time for Christmas. Beautiful
book.
